Reykjavíkurdætur are a female hip-hop group based in Reykjavík. They count 10 members and are recognized for their dynamic lyrics and energetic stage-performance. With a powerful performance at the music festival, Icelandic Airwaves in 2015, they made their first big impact on the music scene in Iceland, and since then they have performed at different festivals around Europe such as; FiB in Spain, Trans Musicales in the France, and Roskilde festival in Denmark.
The group consists of women from different streams of life, but what unites them is their passion for music, rap and lyrical flow. They work as a collective, but also as smaller units within the group. The core of their ideology is to rebel against conservative misogynistic values of modern society, this shines clearly through their lyrics: the empowerment of women standing united; that women can occupy societal space. At the end of the day, they are a large group of women who, on their own terms, enjoy going on stage, giving the audience and each other all they got.
Reykjavíkurdætur have received great publicity for tearing down walls and shock their fellow citizens, and therefore ploughing the soil for the seeds of coming generations of female rappesses.
